KliK Foundation: Successful completion of first Call for Proposals to procure ITMOs

Dear newsletter subscribers

The KliK Foundation’s first Call for Proposals to procure emission reductions through international activities has come to a successful close with the preselection of three activities.

From 1 April to 12 May 2019, around 60 registered organisations were invited to answer the KliK Foundation’s first Call for Proposals by submitting mitigation activities that would allow the Foundation to procure emission reductions according to the rules of the Paris Agreement beginning in 2021.

Promising activities proposed for Africa and Asia

By the submission deadline, 31 proposals had been submitted by 21 organisations. Proposals were distributed rather evenly across the regions of Africa (12), Asia (10) and South America (7). Europe and Oceania each accounted for one proposal.

On 3 June, the KliK Foundation selected three proposals for further processing subject to certain conditions; these two activities in Africa and one activity in Asia are offering total emission reductions of 5 million tonnes of CO₂e for the period 2021–2030.

The corresponding adjustment of emissions accounting is a key condition

Further processing of the preselected activities is conditional on the issuance of a Letter of Intent (LoI), with which the transferring country’s government confirms its intention to make corresponding adjustments to its emission inventory for emission reductions transferred under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Emissions accounting in Switzerland and in the transferring country  must be adjusted by entries that cancel each other out in order to avoid the double crediting of emission reductions. This is a key requirement for activities seeking to produce internationally traded emission reductions.

Continued development of the Foundation’s portfolio

The KliK Foundation keeps working toward building a portfolio of activities qualified for further development as part of the Foundation’s procurement process. To this end, the Foundation will publish regular updates via this newsletter.

The Foundation plans to provide private organisations with a further opportunity for application in the second half of 2019. It will then carry out a second Call for Proposals for the submission of mitigation activities.

Government agencies may still register with the KliK Foundation and submit proposals for mitigation activities at any time, regardless of Calls for Proposals.
