KliK Foundation is preparing for the obligation to extend the scope of its
carbon offset activities to countries other than Switzerland starting in 2021.
The draft proposal for the Swiss CO₂ Act stipulates that motor fuel importers, i.e. the KliK Foundation as their carbon offset grouping, are newly required to also reduce greenhouse gas emissions abroad through mitigation activities. For the period 2021 to 2030, this should amount to 54 million tonnes of CO₂e to be reduced via international activities.
To date, the KliK Foundation has approved around 50 organisations for the procurement of emission reductions and is in contact with 5 countries to identify potential activities (April 2019). Partners have been invited to submit proposals for mitigation activities.
While some potential mitigation activities have already been identified with a view to generating creditable emission reductions (ITMOs) from 2021 onward, it is too early to provide meaningful forecasts as to the expected impact of such projects.
